For When You Feel Stuck

“Just because you’re stuck right now, doesn’t mean that will be permanent. It is only a phase, even if it may feel like a long one.”

There are moments in life where everything feels slow, heavy, and uncertain. You may sense a feeling of being stuck whether it involves pressure from school, personal issues, or confusion about what your future might look like. Although, there are some mechanisms in place for when individuals need a little push in order to stay motivated throughout difficult times. Feeling stuck is normal, and almost everyone experiences it at some point in their lifetime. But, that same feeling shouldn’t prevent you from moving forward or flourishing.

A core idea behind all of this is resilience; this means simply not giving up even when things “hit the fan”. Sometimes progress is not going to be drastic or seem exciting. Sometimes it's just about getting through the day, finishing that homework assignment you’ve been procrastinating on, or finding the strength to try again after failing. Even when it feels like you’re out of options — progress still stands as one of those few. Growth won’t happen overnight, it takes time, but as long as you take things step by step, eventually those steps will build you a staircase.

One way to stay motivated is by building small daily habits. Severe changes can become overwhelming, but small ones are easier to manage. For example, setting aside time to study, writing down goals and achievements, or even fixing your sleep schedule in order to slowly but surely build structure in your life. These habits develop a sense of control; over time they make progress more real/visible. It's not about your whole life taking a turn in one day … you just need to start somewhere.

In addition to that, another important factor of motivation is mindset. The manner in which you think about your struggle(s) has an impact on how you respond to them. If you automatically give up as failure approaches, it will be harder to keep going. So instead, you should be viewing failure as a lesson, as it becomes a part of your journey in the long-run. You have to understand the fact that being stuck is solely temporary, but being consistent, believing in yourself, and having patience can help guide you until you find your way.

Mindset became especially crucial for me when my grandmother passed away in November 2022. She was someone who I just gravitated towards; losing her made me feel completely lost, one of the most important role-models in my life was suddenly gone, just like that. For a while, I struggled to stay motivated as everything started to feel heavier and more difficult than usual. Tasks such as focusing while in school or keeping up with grades/responsibilities became a challenge for me. I eventually came to the realization that a change of mindset doesn’t mean I have to ignore my grief. Instead I had to learn how to move forward while still carrying my grief everywhere I went. This experience taught me that motivation doesn’t always involve you feeling strong enough; sometimes it’s about simply choosing to keep going even when life becomes stressful.

Also, discipline plays a crucial role when motivation begins to fade. Motivation comes and goes, but discipline pushes you to keep going even if you don’t feel like it. Discipline means not giving up on yourself, showing up, and getting the job done anyway. It is not about being perfect, it's about consistency; discipline builds that up as you are proving to yourself that you’re capable of moving forward regardless of how you feel.

Many people, especially students and young adults, experience moments in their life where they feel no motivation, overwhelmed, or unsure about what their future holds. Learning how to stay motivated helps those build stronger habits, healthier thinking, and a better sense of direction. These changes may start off pretty small, but they can genuinely shape a person’s future in ways you would’ve never thought possible.

Just because you’re stuck right now, doesn’t mean that will be permanent. It is only a phase, even if it may feel like a long one. With patience, consistency, and self-belief, you will find your way, I promise you. The only thing progress requires is effort. You are the only one who has the ability to open up doors in favor of your future. Sometimes, the most important step is simply making the decision to not let yourself fall.
