COVER STORIES: BEYOND THE BORDER

Introduced by former Minneapolis resident and current Comp Sci High teacher, Christopher Sturdy.

If the cover stories in this edition had a soundtrack, it would be whistles trilling and ricocheting down city streets. Three short bursts to signal agents in the area. One long sustained blast to indicate a detention in progress. The hum of drones surveilling citizens or the whipping whir of helicopter blades in the dead of night waking children for the umpteenth time. But the soundtrack is also Brass Solidarity, a band formed after the murder of George Floyd and continued through the ICE occupation, playing Lift Every Voice and Sing every Monday evening to residents that still remember how to dance and sing and cry out together. The soundtrack is Prince songs playing posthumously in the music scene he built on frozen land to keep hearts warm. The soundtrack is a crowd of over 100,000 swallowing the streets in protest despite subzero temperatures because, yes, we know how loud violence is, but we also know that love is louder.
