A Day in the Life of Jay
“Jay is deeply loved here, so whenever you get a chance, don’t be shy. Stop and have a conversation with him.”
When you walk into Comp Sci High, the first person you see is Jay. He is a welcoming face when you first enter Comp Sci High. He likes to connect with the kids and, little do you know, he knows a lot of our names without us knowing or speaking to him much. He has worked at Comp Sci High for a year now, the first year of the 447 Wales campus. Due to this, we wanted to ask Jay a few questions about what he does throughout his day while at Comp Sci High.
Jay starts his day early. We asked him, “What time do you usually wake up?” He responded: “I wake up at 5 am and feed my cat and make a cup of coffee and start to get ready.” Around 7:20, he takes a few minutes to zone out and get ready to head on to work. Jay also shared that by 7:45, he is arriving at work and settling in. This to him looks like checking his emails and his g-chats for any important reminders.
A very fun fact about Jay: he has little plastic critters on his desk, and he tends to greet them every morning as well.
Between 8 to 8:30, he is letting staff and students in the building. He greets them with a nice warm welcoming smile. While doing this, he is still making sure to check his email for any new emails. You would think that scanning our ID’s in the morning is enough for making sure everything is put in the right place, but it’s not. After Jay is done with his greetings, he does attendance for everyone in the school on a different platform, and this is to make sure the attendance is correct for everybody. This all takes place between 9 and 10:30.
From 12:00 to 1:30 Jay is dropping valuable life lessons on the youth. This is between the 9th and 10th lunch period, along with the 11th and 12th lunch period. Now here comes the chill part of Jay’s day. From 2:00 to 5:00 pm, Jay is just sitting and chilling and watching cameras.
We wanted to get the real deep side of Jay, and so we asked him about how he really feels about his job and the best parts of his day. Jay stated “One of my favorite parts about my day is having conversations with Ja’Ziah.” These little moments bring joy to Jay, and not only to him but also to Ja’Ziah as well. It makes her feel like she is heard and the life lessons that Jay teaches really stick with her. We also asked him what's a small way someone has impacted your day recently, and he then responded: “Having good tea sessions with Ja’Ziah and her clique.” Jay knows that he is always important to them, and it makes him feel loved.
We then asked him what are the more challenging aspects of his day. He responded by saying: “One of the hardest parts of my day is watching the scanners in the morning.” This is because he has to make sure that no weapons are being brought in the building, which is understandable because he has the job of keeping everyone safe, and if one day somebody brings a weapon to school, it's really important to the school and to Jay that everyone is safe. Jay also shared that a part of his day that makes him feel the most alive is interacting with people and sharing life experiences with others. This shows that Jay is a people person, which leads him to be more open to talking to everyone.
Lastly we asked him: “What is something in your daily life that you don’t speak about often - but matters to you?” Jay stated: “My family, because I love my family.”
Jay is a family guy. He loves his family and would do anything for his family. Here at Comp Sci High, we are family. Even if we all don’t talk to each other we are a part of the same community. Jay is a part of our family, As seniors leaving in a month, we will deeply miss Jay. Just seeing his warm smile and hearing his laughter brings us and everyone else love.
Jay is deeply loved here, so whenever you get a chance, don’t be shy. Stop and have a conversation with him.
