We Might All Be “Severed”

“In conclusion, don’t neglect yourself, and become a person you want to be. If you want to be free, then make a plan for it to happen.”

Have you ever wondered why we act so differently inside and outside of certain places? Whether it’s in an office, at a party, a meeting, or simply entering a new room. It’s as if something shifts within our brain. It can feel as if another person is entering the scene that isn’t us, but still using our body. It’s still you, technically, however it feels like a whole new personality was just created to fit in the space.

Many will call this code switching, a way for us to adjust ourselves to the environment. But I believe it’s something deeper, it isn’t as simple as just switching. It’s like part of us is always severed.

In the popular show Severance, employees like Mark Scout undergo a procedure where a chip is placed inside the brain. This literally splits the brain, and creates two different kinds of personalities. One that’s an outie that lives outside of the corporation, and one that is an innie the works inside the corporation. However the outie has access to the entire world while the innie is trapped inside of it in a endless loop, until the outie dies or wants to stop working.

The idea is that we are able to control what we do outside of work, but whenever we are somewhere, a place, an office, we are to follow protocol and if we don’t follow it we are fired, punished, or simply given a warning. Ther is an innie inside of us that wants to be free and go outside and explore the world, and have the same amount of freedom as the outie, instead of simply being stuck, only living for the outie and doing the work.

Not only that, but when we switch jobs, we are also surrounded by other people, whether they act genuine or not, it’s up to us to figure it out. But the thing is they often forget themselves, not by mistake, but by pure tiredness. They have to work at a job that doesn’t really mean anything to them. So they feel stuck. In a way this can be us, many work without knowing the reason, they dream of doing something else that is a lot more fun to their eyes. Maybe exploring the world, hanging out with friends, partying. But might feel like they hit a roadblock and listen to people and never the person inside saying they want out.

In conclusion, don’t neglect yourself, and become a person you want to be. If you want to be free, then make a plan for it to happen. At the end of the day we are human and we shouldn’t disappoint ourselves when we are at places and feel like other people are controlling us and not you ourselves.
