On Senioritis
“Life isn’t always easy but you always have support. Use it.”
Have you ever heard of senioritis? It’s a feeling that many students get in their last year of high school. After 3 years of hard work, they might start to feel a bit burnt out or less interested in doing their homework, studying, or going to class. This can lead to grades going down, missed deadlines, and trouble staying focused and waking up to making it to school. It’s totally normal to feel this way, but it can be a problem if it affects important things like college applications or graduation requirements. But, there are ways to stay motivated and set goals to help you push through and finish strong!
Waking up with the feeling of exhaustion and not having any motivation to fully get up, get ready, develop energy, and go to school everyday is draining. Realizing I wasn’t the only one feeling like this made me feel a little better because at least I knew I wasn’t alone and the only one feeling this way. Students weren’t coming to school. The whole grade’s GPA was decreasing along with attendance and the effort.
Senior year compared to freshman year is so so so different and just the complete opposite. Freshman year, I would actually be excited to come to school and see everyone and be in class and look forward to hanging out with my friends after school. Once I saw my grade slack, I would get on top of it right away.
Now, in my senior year, I don’t have the motivation to even get up from bed. I would get so used to not having school for a day or two where I would stop coming to school for a few more days. I would extend my own break not caring about how it would affect my grades and the load of work I would need to do when I go back. I had to learn the hard way that the more I avoid school the more work and stress I have to deal with when I get back.
As mentioned, I am not the only senior in Comp Sci High that has felt this way. Here are some more students and their perspectives.
The first student said:
“I stopped caring about school and I know it’s not okay since this is the worst year to not care, since college acceptances are starting to happen. Once they see you start to slack they can take it right back like nothing happened. It’s scary because i worked too hard for everything to just go to waste my last year, but I don’t know what can help nor what to do.”
The second student said:
“I started the school year so strong and motivated like crazy great grades, and now it’s like I’m not even the same person anymore. We are less than 4 months from graduation and I’m just slacking and I hate it but I’ve tired so many different things and nothing has helped.”
The third student said:
“It’s like i don’t care about school anymore — yeah college, I do — but high school I just don’t. Nothing is the same anymore, I’m drained and I don’t know why my energy isn’t here anymore. It’s like a piece of me left and I don’t know where it went. It’s hard because I want to go back to the hard working person I was, but I don’t know where she went.”
Just because you’re personally going through something doesn’t mean you’re the only one going through that same issue. There’s always somebody else that can relate to you and it’s okay, whether it’s a good or bad thing. You never have to go through something alone, especially senioritis, schools should start having mental days and self care days not only during mental health awareness month.
